U.S. retail gasoline price lowest in 7 weeks
17 Feb 2010, Washington: U.S. gasoline prices dropped to their lowest level in seven weeks, the Energy Department said on Tuesday, thanks to lower crude oil costs.The national average price for regular unleaded gasoline fell 4.4 cents over the last week to $2.61 a gallon, but was still up 64 cents from a year earlier, the department''s Energy Information Administration said in its weekly survey of service stations.In its new monthly energy forecast, the EIA said it still expects gasoline to top $3 a gallon this spring and summer, when highway travel generally increases.In its weekly price survey, the agency found the West Coast had the most expensive gasoline at $2.86 a gallon, down 3.1 cents. By city, Los Angeles had the highest price at $2.97, down 4.2 cents.

The Gulf Coast states had the lowest regional price at $2.48 a gallon, down 3.3 cents. Houston had the cheapest city pump price at $2.41, down 6.5 cents.The agency also said gasoline prices were down 2 cents at $2.78 in Seattle; down 1.6 cents at $2.76 in Miami; down 2.8 cents at $2.69 in New York; down 5.3 cents at $2.66 in Chicago; down 2.7 cents at $2.63 in Boston; down 2 cents at $2.49 in Denver and down 8.9 cents at $2.47 in Cleveland.

Separately, the average price for diesel fuel fell 1.3 cents to $2.76 a gallon, also the lowest level in seven weeks but 57 cents more than a year ago, the EIA said.The New England region had the most expensive diesel at $2.99 a gallon, down 2.3 cents. The Midwest states had the cheapest diesel fuel at $2.71, down 1.9 cents.
