Besides Mumbai, 15,000 dentists in over 1,000 towns and cities will be committing some part of their time for this intiative and offering free dental check-ups.
Inspired by the response generated in last 5 years, this year Oral Health Month will span across two months, September - October 2009. Those interested in availing the free dental check-ups can SMS their postal pin code to 5676725 or call the toll free OHM helpline 1800228550 for information on a dentist in their locality. The dentist details are provided as a reply to the SMS. They then need to make a call to the dentist for an appointment, and schedule their free dental check-up. People can also log on to www.oralhealthmonth.co.in to find a dentist at a convenient location. Detailed terms & conditions applicable for availing free dental check-ups are given on the OHM website.
A recent national consumer usage and attitudes survey (CUAS) conducted by IMRB and sponsored by Colgate-Palmolive (India) Limited highlighted that dental problems in India are reflected in the low awareness levels and poor oral hygiene habits. According to the survey, 67% of Indians have never visited a dentist and around 87% of the Indian population does not believe in visiting dentists unless there is a problem. Oral Health Month is a platform created by Colgate and supported by IDA, to educate people about oral care by organising free dental check-ups, helping people to take that first step towards having good oral health.
Mr. Roger Calmeyer, Managing Director, Colgate-Palmolive (India) Limited said, “Oral Health Month is an initiative we are extremely proud of at Colgate. The initiative which began in 2004 to establish and promote the importance of good oral hygiene continues to drive us to be better each year and add new dimensions to be able to achieve our objective effectively. This year, in its 6th edition, Oral Health Month is 5 times bigger in scope as we have committed to reach over 1,000 towns and cities with the help of 15,000 dentists throughout September and October 2009. We appreciate the unrelenting support from the Indian Dental Association and the participating dentists in making this campaign a success through the years.”
Dr. Sharif Firoz, Secretary, IDA Mumbai Branch said, “Oral health is very important and critical for the overall health, yet it is often neglected until a toothache makes it unbearable. Numerous studies over the years, investigating the mouth-body connection, have suggested an association between oral health and general health. We are proud to partner with Colgate for Oral Health Month initiative which aims to generate awareness about the need for proper oral care practices.”
