: GE Healthcare IT, a leading vendor of healthcare information technology, announced today the recipients of the 2nd Annual Innovation Awards, recognizing healthcare organizations using Centricity Business and Centricity Practice to optimize patient care, increase efficiency and leverage technology with emerging ideas and solutions.
“GE is privileged to support the outstanding work of all our customers, and proud to recognize an elite group of them today,” said James M. Corrigan, Vice President and General Manager, GE Healthcare IT. “By partnering with GE Healthcare in their efforts to adopt information technology, these six customers are placing information at the center of care in new and inspiring ways – and realizing dividends in both financial results and patient care improvements.”
Selected from a field of qualified candidates, the final recipients were announced in an awards ceremony at the GE Healthcare IT User Summit in Washington, D.C. on August 19. Awards were bestowed on the following GE Healthcare customers:
- University of Colorado Hospital (UCH), for using the Centricity Business - Self-service Kiosk solution to improve operational efficiency and patient care management at a pilot site. By giving patients the opportunity to check-in via kiosks, the UCH site reduced the number of paper forms required per patient at check-in by 80% and cut check-in time for returning patients by 75%. In addition, reimbursement denials were reduced by 30% due to greater accuracy of patient demographic information.
- Alliance of Chicago - By utilizing HIT (health information technology) as a key component of their growth strategy to improve the quality and safety of healthcare services, the Alliance of Chicago, a network of four community health centers with 34 clinical locations, has continually achieved tangible benefits. A known expert in operational effectiveness, Alliance leverages Centricity Practice Solution, Centricity EMR and GE Healthcare’s quality outcomes reporting solution to measure, impact and improve their active disease management and prevention programs.
- Duke University Health System – Recognized for exemplary use of patient access capabilities within Centricity Business, Duke has streamlined workflow to create a seamless patient access process. This has benefited patients and is also good for Duke’s bottom line: their registration denial rate has dropped to just 2%. By leveraging GE's HealthCare Objects technology to connect Centricity Business to their patient portal application, Duke became one of the first GE Healthcare customers to provide patient access functions through their online portal. In addition, the organization’s has maximized its use of the Centricity Business patient financials suite, contributing to a reduction in A/R – down to 32 days. Headquartered in Durham, NC, Duke is an integrated delivery network comprised of three hospitals and over 60 clinics.
- Blair Medical Associates, for their achievements in the areas of operational efficiency and patient care. Blair Medical Associates created a multi-talented revenue cycle team to maximize the usage of Centricity EMR and Centricity Group Management. Across the group’s nine locations, Blair’s average of 1,000-plus patients per day have a seamless experience from registration to check-out. Even as they underwent significant process improvements, Blair maintained revenue cycle results at or above industry averages: currently, their office’s combined monthly days in accounts receivable (A/R) is less than 30 days, and percentage of A/R over 120 days is 2.5% - well under the 2007 MGMA median benchmark for a “well-run practice” of 3.16% .
- Wake Forest University Physicians (WFUP), for leadership in the use of Centricity Business and Centricity EMR. WFUP – a 560-member physician practice group – is part of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, a prestigious integrated delivery network based in North Carolina. In 2007, Medicare launched a pay-for-performance program (called the “Pay for Reporting Initiative,” or PQRI), which required participating providers to report clinical data for certain measures. In response, Wake Forest launched an internal initiative to create processes, tools and workflows to maximize their reporting to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Leveraging standard and custom functionality in Centricity Business, Wake Forest replaced a traditionally manual process with an automated system to review charges for the proper codes. Wake Forest maximized the connections between Centricity Business and Centricity EMR: if the billing system detects coding problems, it automatically goes back to the EMR to find proper codes for the claims. Wake Forest was able to produce an 80% reporting rate across their participating departments, resulting in a bonus from Medicare that exceeded their expectations.
- Westchester Medical Group, recognized for their outstanding achievements and overall innovative use of GE technology. Based in White Plains, NY, Westchester is an independent multi-specialty physician group with 150 physicians in ten locations. A Centricity customer since 2002, Westchester’s recent implementation of the Centricity Business revenue cycle management solution has positioned the organization for accelerated growth. With Centricity EMR well-established as an integral part of their workflow, Westchester recognized that the tight integration between the two solutions would provide additional efficiencies, while enhancing their well-deserved reputation for excellent patient care.
