: A nationwide tour featuring the latest technological advances in vehicle safety, including one that could save more than 10,000 lives a year, will be on display on Wednesday near Comerica Park.
From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the North parking lot of Comerica Park (on Montcalm between Woodward Avenue and the I-75 Service Drive), educational demonstrations will be offered to local safety officials, medical and law enforcement personnel as well as interested members of the public. General Motors safety experts and Safe Kids Worldwide will be on hand to answer questions about vehicle safety and protecting children.
“GM is implementing automotive technology that’s been proved to help save lives,” said Bob Lange, GM executive director of Structure and Safety Integration. “We are committed to making our vehicles and roads safer for all passengers. Driver error is the cause of most accidents, but we are doing what we can to make the vehicle itself safer.”
One especially timely exhibit will demonstrate how the temperature rises dramatically inside a closed vehicle – as much as 19 degrees in just 10 minutes. The display is part of GM’s “Never Leave Your Child Alone” partnership with Safe Kids. At least two dozen children have died this year from heat stroke after being left in a closed vehicle.
Other safety features that will be highlighted include:
Electronic Stability Control (StabiliTrak), which an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety study estimated could prevent 10,000 fatal crashes in the U.S. annually if the technology were used on every vehicle.
OnStar’s latest post-crash technology, which can dramatically improve emergency response time to a crash and reduce fatalities from motor vehicle crashes by 20 percent.
Daytime Running Lamps, a proven lifesaving technology that has helped save more than 430 lives in the last decade by making vehicles more visible to pedestrians and cyclists.
Media and invited guests can experience GM’s safety features firsthand on a guided tour and test rides. For a demonstration and animation of GM’s StabiliTrak, visit the Web site www.badertv.com/safetytour .
