‘Cyber Safe Thane’ Organised by Thane Police & NASSCOM

NASSCOM, the premier trade body and ‘voice’ of the Indian IT-BPO industry, today announced that it would be organising ‘Cyber Safe Thane’, a three day awareness campaign on Cyber safety and security issues for customers, industry, academia, and other stakeholders in Thane from September 18-20th, 2008.
 
1 Sep 2008 : NASSCOM, the premier trade body and ‘voice’ of the Indian IT-BPO industry, today announced that it would be organising ‘Cyber Safe Thane’, a three day awareness campaign on Cyber safety and security issues for customers, industry, academia, and other stakeholders in Thane from September 18-20th, 2008.

NASSCOM has taken a holistic view of Information Security through its ‘Trusted Sourcing’1 Initiative to strengthen the regulatory framework and further improve India’s attractiveness as an outsourcing destination. This multi-pronged initiative is targeted at employees, organizations, enforcement agencies and policy amendment, through a ‘4E Framework’ - Engagement, Education, Enactment and Enforcement.

Ameet Nivsarkar, Vice President, NASSCOM said “even though a lot of people are using the internet, general awareness about the cyber world and security measures for online medium, is comparatively low. This is a cause for concern given today’s rapidly growing internet users. Additionally, more and more companies are using this medium to conduct business, and hence need to be aware about best practices as well as possible pitfalls. NASSCOM has taken a number of steps through its initiatives in this area, Cyber Safe Thane, a public private partnership, is an extension of our efforts to educate users and make them aware of the best practices for using this medium.”

Expressing their keenness to partner with NASSCOM, Mr. Anil Dhere, Commisioner of Police, Thane said "We are collaborating with NASSCOM-DSCI for spreading awareness on Cyber Security Issues and Dealing with Cyber Crime using the public private partnership benefitng the society. We look forward to a long term enagagement with various stake holders along with NASSCOM-DSCI and follow best practices."

NASSCOM is looking to arrange discussions and interactions with students, parents, corporate, lawyers, judiciary, cyber cafe owners, heads of Cyber Crime Cell and people at large to spread awareness about the Cyber Space, Security Issues and Preventive Measures. The activities will be focused on high impact areas like financial services, BPO sector, user community, child safety issues and the rising menace of Cyber Crime.

India Cyber Lab, Thane; a joint initiative of Thane Police and NASSCOM was established on August 23, 2005. Till now, 1217 officers have been trained from various police stations of Thane, Navi Mumbai and Thane District Police through this effort.

Among its other initiatives, NASSCOM also recently announced that the registration for the National Skills Registry2has touched the 3,30,000 mark as of July 2008, and over 65 companies have registered on the NSR.

NASSCOM earlier announced the appointment Mr. Shyamal Ghosh as the Chairman, and Dr. Kamlesh Bajaj as the CEO of the Data Security Council of India3- which has been conceptualized and initiated by NASSCOM as an independent self regulatory body for the Indian IT-BPO industry.

1 NASSCOM launched the Trusted Sourcing initiative in 2005. This initiative seeks to reinforce India as a secure and reliable technology partner. NASSCOM has also instituted the 4E framework to establish India as a trusted sourcing destination. This framework ensures highest standard of information security in the outsourcing industry in India.
2 The National Skills Registry (NSR) is a centralised database of all employees of the IT services and BPO companies in India. Launched in January 2006, this database contains third party verified personal, qualification and career information of IT professionals. The NASSCOM Executive Council has also registered on the NSR.
3 SRO is an independent self-regulatory body that will establish, promote and popularise, monitor as well as enforce privacy and data protection standards for India’s IT BPO Industry. SRO, the only organization of its kind in the IT BPO industry globally, will raise the floor on Information Security practices among Indian organizations and help India differentiate itself.
