August 10, 2004, Kolkata: NIIT, the IT Training pioneer and Ananda Bazar Patrika, the most respected and largest read Bengali newspaper have announced a State-wide IT Aptitude Test.
With leading IT companies setting up development centres in the State, the demand for trained IT manpower has seen a significant increase. The NIIT, Ananda Bazar Patrika and the IT Department, Govt. of West Bengal, have joined hands to showcase the vast opportunities in this sunrise industry, as well as to prepare the youth of West Bengal assess their aptitude for an IT or BPO career.
The Ananda Bazar Patrika-NIIT IT Aptitude Test, endorsed by the IT Department, was formally launched by Dr. G. D. Gautama, IT Secretary, Govt. of West Bengal, at a function to felicitate NIIT alumni who have made a mark in the industry.
Unveiling the initiative, Dr. Gautama said, "Recognizing the intellectual wealth of the State and its vision of emerging as an important IT hub in India, the number of IT giants setting up operations in the State is on the rise. This has led to a corresponding increase in the need for trained IT manpower. The West Bengal government is happy to be associated with the NIIT and Ananda Bazar Patrika initiative to identify and funnel a large number of IT career aspirants."
Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Tulika Sinha, Vice President and Zonal Head for NIIT's Eastern India Operations, said, "NIIT will prepare the vast resource pool required by West Bengal to emerge as an IT powerhouse."
Mr. Amitava Dutta, Vice President, Ananda Bazar Patrika, said, "Ananda Bazar Patrika has played an active role in promoting education in the state. We are proud to partner with NIIT, that has trained one out of every three IT professionals, to prepare the youth to seize the burgeoning opportunities in the IT sector."
This IT aptitude test will be conducted in all NIIT Education Centres in West Bengal. Nearly a 1000 students across the 100 NIIT centres topping the IT Aptitude test, and enrolling for an NIIT program, will be reimbursed their college tuition fees. NIIT alumni are working in 19 of the top 20 IT companies.
The Ananda Bazar Patrika-NIIT IT aptitude test takes forward the earlier efforts made by the two giants in this direction. NIIT and Ananda Bazar Patrika, have together been promoting the cause of IT literacy in the state through the ABP-GNIIT scholarships, an annual event aimed at bridging the digital divide and helping meritorious and deserving students to pursue IT education.
