Eminent Oncologists And Scientists Unravel Correlation Between
28 Nov 2008 : Ranbaxy Science Foundation today organized its XXI Round Table Conference on "Lifestyle and Cancer" at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. The programme was moderated by Dr. Lalit Kumar Professor of Medical Oncology, Rotary Cancer Hospital, AIIMS, New Delhi. Prof. K. S. Reddy President Public Health Foundation of India delivered the keynote address on the topic "Cancer and Living Habits: From Science to Policy and Public Health Action". The aim of the conference was to unravel the evidence based relationship between diet, life style and common cancers. Distinguished scientists and clinical oncologists from reputed institutions like AIIMS, GB Pant Hospital, Artemis Hospital, Tata Memorial Hospital, Adyar Cancer Institute, National Institute of Immunology, ICMR and Fortis Hospital etc. deliberated on various issues relating to life style and risk factors for the prevention and treatment of common cancers during the course of scientific sessions held during the conference. More than 120 delegates from various reputed institutes including public persons and students participated in the conference.

The recommendations for promoting cancer prevention and survival of cancer patients who are under treatment that emerged from the day long interactions among the delegates included simple modifications in life style like taking regular exercise, avoiding smoking, maintaining normal body weight, eating more vegetable & fruits, eating less of meat products and limiting the use of alcohol, salt and sugar intake in the day to day life. A high proportion of cancers could be avoided if people made changes to their lifestyle. Epidemiological studies have shown that 70-90% of all cancers are environmental. Tobacco consumption account for about 50% of all cancers in men. Dietary practices, reproductive and sexual practices account for another 20-30% of cancers. The biologically active ingredients of fruits and vegetables have substantial anti-cancer properties. Appropriate change in lifestyle can therefore change cancer risk and can also reduce morbidity and mortality due to cancer. Unfortunately there is low public awareness about the evidence of the relationship between lifestyle and cancer especially common cancers like that of gastro intestinal & liver cancers, breast & ovarian cancers, cervical & uterus cancers, head & neck cancers, lung cancers and cancer of urogenital systems and hematological malignancies.

Ranbaxy Science Foundation, chaired by Dr. Nityanand, is a non profit organization, set up by Ranbaxy Laboratories Limited, which promotes scientific endeavour in the country by encouraging and rewarding excellence in medical and pharmaceutical research and channeling national and international knowledge and expertise. Among the prime activities it undertakes every year are, holding of Scientific Symposia in front line areas of research, inviting Foreign Scientists as visiting Professors and holding of Round Table Conferences on subjects of public health concerns. The Foundation also gives annually four Research Awards in different areas of Biomedical research to scientists for distinguished research besides recognising four young and brilliant upcoming scientists as Ranbaxy Science Scholars every year and awarding scholarships to them. The topics for the earlier Round Table Conferences held so far included Dengue, Tuberculosis, Water Borne Diseases, Malaria, Kalaazar, HIV / AIDS, Tuberculosis, Hepatitis C, Anthrax, Leprosy, Hepatitis B.
