Samsung institutes ‘Tagore Literature Award’ along with Sahitya Akademi, India’s National Academy of Letters  
5 Nov 2009 , New Delhi : Digital technology leader, Samsung India and India’s National Academy of Letters, Sahitya Akademi, today signed an MoU to institute the ‘Tagore Literature Awards’ named after the legendary Shri Rabindranath Tagore. The MoU was signed by Mr. Agrahara Krishna Murthy, Secretary, Sahitya Akademi and Mr. J S Shin, President & CEO, Samsung South West Asia Headquarters in the Capital today.

The first ‘Tagore Literature Awards’ being instituted by Samsung, will recognise the best of literary contributions by writers in 8 Indian languages-Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Punjabi, Telugu and Bodo. The Sahitya Akademi will be selecting the Awardees for the Tagore Literature Award, with the announcement about the winners being made in December 2009. The Presentation Ceremony for the Awards will be organised in the Year 2010.

Speaking on the occasion, stated Mr. JungSoo Shin, President & CEO, Samsung South West Asia HQ, “As part of our corporate philosophy, we believe in giving back to the community some of the profits we earn from it. The Tagore Literature Awards have been instituted as part of Samsung Hope Project, our Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, whereby we are supporting projects in the areas of culture, education and social welfare and building new bridges of hope for beneficiaries of these projects. he Tagore Literature Awards seek to promote Indian literature by recognizing and rewarding the best of literary contributions in multiple Indian languages.”

The Tagore Literature Awards will recognise the best of literary contributions in 8 different Indian languages every year, with all 24 Indian languages being covered by the end of the third year. The same cycle of 8 languages being rewarded every year will continue thereafter. The Awards Presentation Ceremony will be held every year, coinciding with Tagore’s birth day. The winners will receive a Cash Reward from the Company.

Mr. A. K. Murthy, Secretary, Sahitya Akadami lauded Samsung’s efforts to come forward and partner with the Sahitya Akademi to institute the Tagore Literature Awards and promote Indian Literature. “The Tagore Literature Award will complement the Sahitya Akademi Awards and at the same time multiply our efforts in recognizing and promoting lndian literary work and talent.” The Sahitya Akademi will be responsible for selecting the winners for this Award.

Earlier this Year, as part of its ‘Hope Project’, Samsung had set up seven community centers in the slum clusters of Bhubaneswar. Built in a disaster-mitigated, climate adaptive way, these community centers are being completely managed by the community and used for training programs, apart from community gatherings, special functions and other purposes.
