: Siemens Power Generation (PG) is to supply two steam turbine gensets to a biomass-fired plant in Três Lagoas, 600 kilometers northwest of São Paulo. The order, valued at EUR22 million, was placed by the Brazilian company Pöyry Empreendimentos, part of VCP (Votorantim Celulose e Papel), one of the biggest cellulose producers in the Americas. The steam for the two gensets will be provided almost entirely by the combustion of biomass residue from the local pulp mill. The power plant will provide both the pulp mill and an adjacent paper mill with environmentally friendly energy. Due to its high fuel efficiency, the plant will generate enough electricity for the excess to be supplied to the local grid.
Siemens contract covers two SST-PAC 800 steam turbine generator sets, each comprising one steam turbine and one generator. The biomass-fired plant will supply sufficient energy for the production of one million tonnes of pulp per year. The pulp, which constitutes the basis for paper production, will be utilized in a local paper mill, also planned to be built in Três Lagoas. The feed material used for pulp production will be the wood from sustainable eucalyptus plantations.
When the pulp and paper mills have attained their maximum production capacity, the two gensets will jointly generate 160 megawatts (MW). “The high efficiency of the turbines and the utilization of biomass means that Siemens is providing not only a very economical solution, but also very environmentally friendly energy,” says René Umlauft, head of the Industrial Steam Turbines subdivision within PG.
The Power Generation Group (PG) of Siemens AG is one of the premier companies in the international power generation sector. In fiscal 2006 (which ended September 30), Siemens PG posted sales amounting to more than EUR10 billion and received new orders totaling EUR12.5 billion. Group profit amounted to EUR782 million. On September 30, 2006, PG had a work force of approximately 36,400 worldwide.
