: Siemens IT Solutions and Services and the Technical University of Munich (TUM) will continue to carry out research into new IT solutions in the future, and are extending their existing cooperation to 2010. Siemens has been using the expertise of this top German university for three years, and this is now paying off in practical terms: the researchers have developed software that enables data centers to use less energy. Siemens is already testing the solution in its own data center.
Five professorships in the Information Technology faculty have been working with Siemens IT Solutions and Services for about three years. Their attention is focused on server consolidation and capacity planning for data centers. The scientific staff and students have been able to complete their first projects, of which the highlight is an IT solution that improves the utilization of servers in the data center.
Servers in data centers are often poorly utilized. With server consolidation, the software is distributed more efficiently to the existing hardware, and the best possible use is therefore made of the servers. This certainly pays off, since, all in all, the solution makes it possible to save up to thirty percent of the hardware. Various pieces of equipment can be dispensed with, while the existing servers run more efficiently. The bottom line is lower energy costs in the data center. As there are fewer servers, the time and effort spent on managing them is reduced at the same time. The solution has been under test in the Siemens data center in Fürth since the end of 2007.
As part of the cooperative venture called "Dynamic Value Webs for IT Services", the TUM is also engaged in other projects, such as software cartography and the analysis of innovation and outsourcing relationships.
Siemens IT Solutions and Services is an internationally leading provider of IT solutions and services. It has roughly 420 professors, 6,500 academic and non- academic staff (including those at the university hospital “Rechts der Isar”), and 22,000 students. It focuses on the engineering sciences, natural sciences, life sciences, medicine, and economic sciences. After winning numerous awards, it was selected as an “Elite University” in 2006 by the Science Council (Wissenschaftsrat) and the German Research Foundation (DFG). The university’s global network includes an outpost in Singapore. TUM is dedicated to the ideal of a top-level research based entrepreneurial university. http://www.tum.de |
