Hamilton County Supercenter Offers Residents Savings and Selections

Store design helps to minimize environmental impact

21 May 2008 , Cincinnati : The new Colerain Township Wal-Mart Supercenter is ready to welcome shoppers. The store is located at 10240 Colerain Ave. and brings the convenience of one-stop shopping and great values on everyday needs as well as 350 new jobs for the community. Local dignitaries and store associates will cut the ribbon at a grand opening ceremony at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 21. The store will open for business following the ceremony at 8 a.m.

“We’re excited to bring low prices on a wide assortment of merchandise and fresh groceries to local residents,” said Store Manager Michael DeGroat. “Our customers count on us to save them money and help stretch every dollar.”

Supercenter Designed to Minimize Energy Use
The Colerain Township Supercenter was constructed with energy efficient technology and environmentally friendly features to reduce energy and water consumption and minimize waste. The store features over 180 skylights that harvest daylight and reduce the amount of energy required to light the store by up to 75 percent daily.

“We believe that being a good steward of the environment and being a profitable business are goals that can work together,” DeGroat said. “Our store is designed to be energy efficient, allowing us to pass those savings on to our customers while reducing our impact on the environment.”

The freezer cases and non-sales areas of the store have LED lights and sensors that automatically shut off the lights when those areas are unoccupied or customers are not present. LED lighting throughout the store operates 70 percent more efficiently than traditional fluorescent lighting.

Like most Wal-Mart stores, waste heat from the refrigeration system is used to heat hot water for restrooms and kitchen areas. Nationwide, approximately 70 percent of the hot water needs for Wal-Mart Supercenters, Sam’s Clubs and Neighborhood Markets are generated this way, saving enough energy to provide hot water for more than 30,000 U.S. homes per year.

The new store will also offer products that are affordable and sustainable.

New Wal-Mart MoneyCenter Among Time-Saving Services
The new Supercenter will have a Wal-Mart MoneyCenter to assist customers who are outside of mainstream banking with convenient access to low-cost money services, including check cashing, money orders, bill payment and money transfers. With Wal-Mart’s every day low pricing, customers can save 25 to 50 percent or more over other leading money service providers. Customers can also get a Wal-Mart Money Card, which is a prepaid reloadable Visa card that provides many of the features and conveniences of a checking account and credit card without a credit check or the need for a bank account.

Store Celebrates Opening with Donations to Local Groups
In celebration of the store’s grand opening, area organizations will receive a total of $15,500 in grants. The Colerain Township Fire Department will receive $5,000 to support training and education. Ross High School and Colerain Township Police Department are among the grant recipients. (Editor’s note: For a full-list of grants recipients see page three of this release.)

The new store will provide contributions throughout the year to help neighborhood organizations. Groups interested in learning more about funding from Wal-Mart or interested in raising money at Wal-Mart stores can contact the store for details, or go to www.walmartfoundation.org.

New Supercenter Means New Jobs
The new store plans to employ approximately 350 associates, according to DeGroat, and the majority of the jobs will be full time.

“It is exciting to bring new jobs and career opportunities to Colerain Township,” said DeGroat. “I understand how important good jobs are to our associates and our community,” he added.

DeGroat, who started his Wal-Mart career in 1993, is among the majority of Wal-Mart store management who began their careers as hourly associates. Five of the Colerain Ave. Wal-Mart associates have worked for the company for more than 10 years. The national average wage at Wal-Mart for full-time hourly associates is $10.65 per hour.*

Store Helps Customers Stretch their Economic Stimulus Dollars
As economic stimulus payments continue to be distributed, Wal-Mart is giving customers the freedom to spend their dollars on what they and their families need. All Wal-Mart stores, including the new Supercenter, will cash economic stimulus checks for free – with no purchase required. Wal-Mart has also lined up rollbacks and additional price savings in the coming weeks on items throughout the store to help shoppers stretch their dollars.

Internal Wal-Mart research shows its prices on frequently purchased items can be up to 25 percent lower than competitors. With over six in 10 Americans expecting their stimulus checks to cover their family needs, it’s a price gap that will deliver real value in the weeks ahead.
